We love the though this antique, Victorian gold year brooch conjures up! Was it made to commemorate a year of birth pr perhaps the year a couple wed. Sadly we'll never know but we love the possibilities! These antique year/date pieces are highly collectable, with people often collecting as many consecutive years as they can find.
This particular brooch has a pretty gothic style and displays the year '1891'. The brooch is made of 15ct gold and has partial British hallmarks to the back for 15ct gold, Birmingham. There is also a date letter but this is now quite worn and hard to read clearly. It looks likely to be 'u' or 'v' for 1894/1895 which is close to the year the brooch displays.
The brooch has a simple 'c' style clasp to the back with a tube hinge pin which dates to the Victorian era.
The brooch weighs approx 1.85g in total (the numbers are raised with a hollow centre) and measures approx 29.1mm wide by approx 15.6mm tall.
Condition - The brooch is in good antique condition to say it is likely approx 130 years old but does show signs of age and wear. There is an old solder repair to the back of the brooch near the tube hinge of the pin. There are also some holes from where the curved front of the numbers meet the flat back gold panel, these are mainly at the bottom of the numbers towards the back. There are also some dark marks to the gold to the back and the bottom front of the brooch. The pin is a little misshapen but still works. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique box pictured is not included in the sale but the brooch will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
