A popular design used in the Victorian era, swallows were believed to represent love and were also given as a symbol of returning safely to your loved ones. The swallow mates for life, making this brooch a beautiful gift for a special someone to symbolise your commitment to each other.
The brooch would make such a lovely conversion piece, the swallow could be turned into a charm or the gold bar of the brooch could be used too to convert the brooch into a pendant.
The brooch is made from gold, unhallmarked, that test as 9ct. The swallow is made from silver, unhallmarked, and has lovely detailing to the front, studded with 9 small rose cut diamonds of irregular shapes and sizes.
The brooch measures approx 38.7mm wide and the swallow measures approx 12.3mm wide by 11.5mm tall. The brooch weighs approx 1.6g.
Condition - The brooch is in good antique condition but does show signs of age and wear, including surface wear to the gold and silver. The rose cut diamonds are all different shapes and sizes and do show signs of age and wear under close magnification. There are old dark solder marks to the brooch 'bar' section to each side where the swallow has been soldered onto the brooch. The pin fitting still works well and features a simple 'c' hook clasp. Please see photos for more detail.
*Please note the antique box pictured is not included in the sale but the brooch will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
