We love celestial jewels and this incredible vintage cameo brooch features a carving depicting Selene, Goddess of the Moon, complete with an owl and a small crescent moon! The detail is absolutely stunning, it's a true wearable piece of art.
The cameo itself is traditionally known as a lava cameo but the grey/brown stone is likely a piece of tuff or limestone. The cameo has been set in gold plated frame.
The brooch measures approx 34.5mm tall by approx 28.2mm wide by approx 10mm deep (not including the brooch fastening/pin). The brooch weighs approx 8.6g in total.
Condition - The brooch is in good vintage condition but does show signs of age and wear, including surface wear to the gold and the cameo. There are a few chips to the cameo in places, most noticeably to the left hand side of the branch the owl is perched on. The pin mechanism still works and has a simple tube hinge and simple 'c' clasp for the pin. The 'c' clasp is very tight so the pin needs pulling with some pressure to release and fasten. The pin is bent and wider at one end, we're not sure if this is actually how it was made. There are dark marks and wear to the gold plating throughout. Please see photos.
