We love finding antique and vintage chains, they seem to be getting harder and harder to find these days too! This particular chain has a really lovely bar style link, separated by small sections of chain link as well as a super versatile dog clip clasp too - great for adding charms to.
Chains like these were known as 'muff' or 'guard' chains and their super long lengths make them great for doubling up or wearing as one long length. The chain has a fixed dog clip which charms and pendants can easily be added to.
The chain is made of rolled gold which is a base metal centre covered with a fine layer of gold to give the look of a solid gold chain but without the price tag. The metal has a lovely warm rose tone. The dog clip is marked with the maker's mark 'SP'.
The chain measures approx 54 1/2 inches long including the dog clip and the bar links measure approx 20.2mm long each by approx 1.2mm wide. The chain link is approx 2.4mm wide. The chain weighs approx 18.5g in total.
Condition - The chain is in good wearable vintage condition but does show signs of age and wear. The are areas to the bar links and chain sections where the top layer of gold has worn away and the base metal can be seen underneath. This is darker in colour than the top layer of gold. Some of the bar links are now a little misshapen. The dog clip hinge still work well. Please see photos.
