This is an incredibly unusual and well detailed little charm! Shaped like a box, the lid reads 'HOPE CHEST' and the lid opens to reveal a tiny gold person inside wearing a top hat.
The charm represents a tradition that often isn't heard of today. Dating back to the 15th Century, young women would fill ornately carved wooden chests with items, 'saving up' for the marriage they hoped for. We believe the charm is a humorous take on the tradition as there is actually a figure to represent the husband inside instead!
The charm is made of 10ct gold, marked '10k', and is wonderfully detailed throughout. Not only is the top of the box detailed but there is a pattern that runs around all four sides and the bottoms of the box has a landscape scene to it featuring trees and a house. We think this might be to represent the marital home.
Without further marks, it's hard to date the charm exactly but we think it's likely circa 1950s in age.
The charm measures approx 9.5mm including the latch by approx 10.8mm wide (not including the fixing ring or the jump ring) by approx 5.7mm tall and weighs approx 2.5g.
Condition - The charm is in good vintage condition with some light surface wear and a little tarnishing to the gold. The hinged lid opens well and closes with a click. The jump ring is currently pushed closed and is a newer 9ct gold addition. Please see photos.
