This antique Victorian gold sweetheart brooch would make such a special, one of a kind gift for a loved one. We love how the two hearts are joined together by a central turquoise, a stone said to represent true love by the Victorians, and a pair of beautifully decorated wings.
The brooch is made of 9ct gold (the pin is made of base metal) with British hallmarks to the back. These hallmarks run off the edge of the gold so they are very hard to make out, but the first mark would have likely been for 9ct gold (there is also a second 9ct gold hallmark to one side of the right hand heart). There also looks to be an anchor hallmark for Birmingham and we can just make out the top of a date letter mark which looks to be circa 1887-1897. There is also a partial maker's mark which looks to be 'WJB' or 'WJH'.
The brooch weighs approx 2.25g (the hearts are hollow and have some small air holes to the back from when the charm was made) and the front of the brooch measures approx 35.3mm from wide (not including the pin) by approx 17.3mm tall.
Condition - The brooch is in good antique condition to say it is over 100 years old but as with most antiques, it does show signs of age and wear, including surface wear to the gold. There is a very fine split to the gold on the right heart and there is a mark to the left hand wing from where it looks to have been joined on to the heart behind. The brooch fastens with a c-clasp which has been kept quite tight so the pin fits snuggly and needs a little force to open and close. There is also a small loop fixing to the back that a safety chain could be added to. Please see photos.
