One of our favourite styles of antique chains to find, this antiquesterling silver fancy double trombone link chain is such a useful piece to add to your jewellery box. Each trombone link is doubled and interlocked and each of the links are individually hallmarked with the British lion passant hallmark for sterling silver.
Chains like these were originally watch chains to attach a pocket watch to, but now they make such lovely necklaces when the clips are connected together like a clasp. They are rare and harder to find in this length, as often they are between 12-14 inches long which can be a little snug for a necklace length depending on your neck size.
This chain is super versatile as you can wear it with the clasps to the back and the T-bar to the front, or in reverse with the clasps at the front - these make fantastic charm holders!
The chain is made of sterling silver with each of the links being hallmarked for sterling silver. The chain looks to have one original dog clip that is hallmarked for the maker 'MD', the lion passant for sterling silver and a rubbed date mark that looks to be pre 1900 (We think approx late 1800s in age, from the Victorian era). The other dog clip is a newer addition that is marked '925' for sterling silver. We believe the T-bar is a slightly later addition too and is hallmarked for what looks to be the maker 'HP' or 'MP', sterling silver and the date letter 'X' for 1972.
The chain measures approx 18 1/2 inches long (approx 47cm) including the clasps (not including the T-bar and drop). The T-bar is on a fixed drop in the centre of the chain and the T-bar measures approx 3.1cm wide and each trombone link is approx 2.3cm long. The chain weighs approx 23.5g in total.
Condition - The chain is in good antique condition but does show some signs of age and wear, including surface wear to the sterling silver. As mentioned above, we believe that the T-bar and one of the dog clips are not original to the chain. The dog clips still work well. Please see photos.
