We often wish that the pieces we find could talk and tell us their story and we really wish we knew the history of this sweet antique locket. To the front is a blue enamel anchor set within rolled gold which has a lovely pattern to it. To the back is a glass panel which holds a lock of hair inside. From the research we've done, we believe this could have been a love token, given by a lady to her significant other before he set sail, perhaps as a fisherman or in the navy, so he had something to remember her by whilst at sea.
We think the locket likely dates to the Victorian era, a time when photographs were very much a rarity and very expensive, so often locks of a lover's hair were gifted inside lockets instead. This locket truly is a wearable piece of history.
As mentioned, the locket front is made of enamel and rolled gold, which is a base metal with a fine layer of gold adhered to the surface to give the look of solid gold.
The locket measures approx 20.8mm tall (not including the jump ring) by approx 14.1mm wide by approx 4.5mm deep and weighs approx 2.1g.
Condition - The locket is in good antique condition but does show signs of age and wear. There is some wear to the enamel detailing, it looks as though it could have been repaired at some point in time with a slightly different shade of blue and the surface is a little uneven. There is also wear to the glass panel and also to the rolled gold. For a piece that is over 100 years old, it still has a lot of life left. We haven't tried to open the glass panel so it may not be removable. The jump ring is currently pushed closed.
*Please note the antique box and chain pictured are not included in the sale but the locket will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
