This antique sterling silver figa talisman charm is such an unusual piece. The hand is incredibly detailed and the wrist is hinged with the charm being made of three jointed sections so it moves when worn. We've never seen another like it before!
The hand gesture has a variety of meanings (including considered by some as being quite a risque, obscene gesture!) dating back centuries, with one of the most common being a symbol of protection against evil, making figas great wearable talismans if you're looking for a little good luck.
The charm is made of sterling silver, the cham itself isn't hallmarked but has been tested. The attached jump ring has the lion passant hallmark for sterling silver. Without further hallmarks, it's hard to date the charm exactly but we think it's likely circa 1900 in age.
The charm measures approx 23mm tall (not including the jump ring) by approx 7.2mm wide by approx 4.8mm deep and weighs approx 1.2g in total.
Condition - The charm is in good antique condition but does show signs of age and wear. There is surface wear to the silver. The jump ring is currently pushed closed. Please see photos.
*Please note the box and chain pictured are not included in the sale but the charm will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
