Moonstone is such an enchanting gemstone. When the light catches it, the stone glows such beautiful shades of blue. We can't help but think of magical crystal balls when we see it!
 
This antique brooch has been created with nine oval shaped moonstone cabochons, each set in a closed back setting. We think the moonstones may be foiled back, to give the stones extra depth and colour but this does now look to have aged quite a bit underneath the stones. The moonstones change from almost clear-looking to beautiful shades of blue, depending on how the light catches them.
 
The moonstones are set in gold, unhallmarked but tests as 9ct gold. The pin is made of a silver coloured base metal. The pin has a simple tube hinge and C-clasp, circa mid-late 19th Century in age.
 
The brooch measures approx 25.7mm by 26.7mm (not including the pin that is slightly wider than the brooch) by approx 3.6mm deep (not including the pin and its hinge/fastening) and weighs approx 3.8g in total.
 
Condition - The brooch is in good antique condition but does show signs of age and wear to both the gold, moonstones and pin fastening mechanism. The moonstones do have surface wear, natural inclusions and damage to what looks to be foil underneath the stones. When the light doesn't catch the stone, the moonstone can appear almost clear in places. Some of the stones catch the light and appear bluer than others. There are dark solder marks where the pin has been attached and the pin itself is slightly bent out of shape. There are some scratch marks to the gold at the back. Please see photos.
