This antique fob is such a beautiful piece of jewellery, originally made to wear on a watch chain and have close to hand for when you needed to stamp a wax seal, we think it makes a stunning pendant when worn on a chain. 
 
The bottom of the fob is set with a piece of vibrant orange carnelian which has been hand carved with a dove holding an olive branch, perched on top of a heart. Doves are said to symbolise peace, friendship and hope.
 
The carnelian is set in a gold frame with twisting sides that lead to a fixed bail at the top. The gold isn't hallmarked (this is common for a piece of this age) and test as at least 9ct gold. The frame around the carnelian may be gold cased, meaning the top is gold and underneath between the carnelian and gold top layer is a base metal fitting. Without hallmarks, it's hard to date the fob exactly but we believe it's late Victorian in age, circa late 19th Century. 
 
The fob measures approx 16mm tall by approx 14.3mm wide by approx 11.3mm deep and weighs approx 1.5g in total. The carved carnelian slice measures approx 11.9mm by 8.7mm. 
 
The fixed bail can be used to slide directly on to a chain or clip. Or if preferred, a jump ring could be added to this. The internal diameter is approx 3.4mm.
 
Condition - The fob is in good antique condition but does show signs of age and wear. There is some wear and marks to the gold in places, including around the top and bottom of the carnelian's gold frame. There is also some surface wear and some small nibbles to the carnelian to both sides. Please see photos.
