A popular design used in the Victorian era, swallows were believed to represent love and were also given as a symbol of returning safely to your loved ones. The swallow mates for life, making this pendant a beautiful gift for a special someone to symbolise your commitment to each other. We think it would make an incredibly sentimental gift for a bride to be!
The pendant is made from 9ct gold and has British marks on the back twice for 9ct gold, one '9ct' the other '9.375'. Without further marks, it's hard to date the pendant exactly but given its style and materials, we believe it's likely late Victorian in age, circa 1900/or possibly 1910.
The pendant has lovely detailing to the front with a circular border framing a swallow in flight with a spray of what look to be three flowers in its beak. One of the flowers is set with a pretty amethyst coloured glass stone, the other two set with a seed pearl each. The swallow is also set with seven small seed pearsl. The pendant is plain to the back.
The pendant measures approx 24mm in diameter (approx 30mm tall including the jump ring) by approx 1.5mm deep. The pendant weighs approx 1.25g.
Condition - The pendant is in good antique condition with some signs of age and wear, including light surface wear to the gold, seed pearls and glass. The jump ring is currently soldered closed. Please see photos for more detail.
*Please note the antique box and chain pictured are not included in the sale but the pendant will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
