One of our favourite styles of antique chains to find, this antique 9ct gold trombone link chain is one of the nicest watch chains we've ever found! Each trombone link is interspersed with beautiful decorative links that rmind us of little rope knots, all of which are individually hallmarked with British hallmarks for 9ct gold. Each dog clip and T-bar are also hallmarked too!
This is a true heirloom piece which is already ove 100 years old but is ready to be treasured for centuries to come.
Chains like these were originally watch chains to attach a pocket watch to, but now they make such lovely necklaces when the clips are connected together like a clasp. They are rare and harder to find in this length, as often they are between 12-14 inches long which can be a little snug for a necklace length depending on your neck size.
This chain is super versatile as you can wear it with the clasps to the back and the T-bar to the front, or in reverse with the clasps at the front - these make fantastic charm holders!
The chain is made of 9ct gold which has a lovely antique soft rose gold tone to it (the T-bar is slightly yellower in tone). Without full British hallmarks, it's hard to date the chain exactly but we think it's likely Edwardian in age, circa 1900-1910.
The chain measures approx 16 inches long (approx 41cm) including the clasps (not including the T-bar and drop). The T-bar is on a fixed drop in the centre of the chain and this drop measures approx 3cm. The T-bar measures approx 4.2cm wide and each trombone link is approx 2.2cm long. The chain weighs approx 27.3g in total.
Condition - The chain is in good antique condition but does show some signs of age and wear, including surface wear to the gold. We believe that the T-bar and at least one of the dog clips are not original to the chain. Both dog clips and the T-bar have maker's marks. The T-bar is marked for the maker 'JES' and the two dog clips' maker's marks are now very worn and are not fully legible but both look to be for different maker's. One dog clip is a little smaller than the other but they match very well in gold tone. The T-bar is slightly yellower in tone. The dog clips still work well. Please see photos.
