We love finding antique chains, they seem to be getting harder and harder to find these days too! This particular gold chain is such an incredible long length, often chains like these are broken up into shorter lengths so it was so refreshing to find this beauty in what we believe is its original size.
This antique chain is such a versatile piece for your jewellery box and a real timeless piece too! Wear it on its own, layer it with other chains or add charms to the dog clip clasp. So many different looks in one!
The chain and dog clip are both made of 9ct gold with a slightly warm, rosy tone to them. The chain has a very small square attached to a link near the dog clip that faintly reads '9c'. The dog clip is also marked '9c' for 9ct gold.
The chain doesn't open, as it is such a long length it is worn but placing it directly over your head and it can be doubled up depending on the length you'd like to wear it at. The dog clip is in a fixed position, connecting the two ends of the chain onto a jump ring that the dog clip then connects to.
Without full hallmarks it's hard to date the chain exactly but given its style, length and gold markings, we believe it's likely Victorian in age.
The chain measures approx 53 3/4 inches long in total including the dog clip drop. The belcher link measures approx 2.5mm wide and the dog clip measures approx 16mm long by 6mm wide. The chain weighs approx 12.4g in total, it is quite a light chain considering its length.
Condition - The chain is in a used and worn antique condition with signs of age and wear throughout. There is wear to the links, including several old repairs, and some links are slightly misshapen. The chain is quite light considering its length so we'd recommend adding only light charms to the dog clip and care needs to be taken when worn. As with a lot of belcher link chains, the links can twist on themselves and can need a little help untwisting but they are easily untwisted again with a little persuasion. The dog clip still works well but it is slightly misshapen. We have priced the chain with its condition in mind. This is a well loved, old piece of jewellery that shows signs of its age throughout.
