One of our favourite styles of antique chains to find, this antique sterling silver curb link chain is such a useful piece to add to your jewellery box. Each of the links are individually hallmarked with the British lion passant hallmark for sterling silver and the clasp is made up of a dog clip and a button loop.
Chains like these were originally watch chains to attach a pocket watch to, but now they make such lovely necklaces when the dog clip is connected to the button loop like a clasp. We particularly love that the button loop on this chain can be used as a charm holder, as well as being able to add charms to the dog clip too. If preferred, the button loop could be removed and the chain can even be doubled up around the wrist and worn as a bracelet - super multifunctional!
This chain is very versatile as you can wear it with the clasps to the back with the lovely curb link to the front, or in reverse with the clasp at the front - either as is or with charms and pendants added.
The chain is made of sterling silver with each of the links being hallmarked for sterling silver. The dog clip and button hook/loop also have British hallmarks for sterling silver, Birmingham and the date letter X for 1922. There is a maker's mark on the button hook/loop for NCR Co for NC Reading and Co, a jewellers that can be traced back to as early as 1896.
The chain measures approx 13 1/2 inches long (approx 34.3cm) and including the dog clip and button hook/loop it's approx 15 1/2 inches in total (approx 39.3cm). The chain weighs approx 29.7g in total and the curb link measures approx 5mm wide.
Condition - The chain is in good antique condition but does show some signs of age and wear, including surface wear to the sterling silver. The dog clip hinge still works well. Please see photos.
