The Hebrew word for watchtower, for centuries, particularly during the Victorian era, sweethearts have given Mizpah jewellery to their loved one when they have been separated from one another in the hope that they will remain safe and well whilst apart, until they are reunited.
This beautiful antique Mizpah ring is the perfect example of this type of love token. Made from 9ct gold with British hallmarks, the word 'MIZPAH' is spelt out in raised letters in a beautiful gothic style font. The gold has a lovely rose tone to it which is much softer in colour than new 9ct rose gold made today.
Inside, the ring has British hallmarks for 9ct gold, Chester and the date letter 'Q' for 1916. There is also a maker's mark but this is hard to make out clearly.
The ring weighs approx 1.2g and measures approx 6.5mm at its widest point at the front and tapers down to approx 2.5mm wide at the back.
Ring size - it measures on a ring mandrel at approx a US size 6 1/2-3/4 / approx a UK N (As the ring is quite wide to the front, we'd say it wears a little smaller than this but this does depend on your finger shape and size)
Condition - The ring is in good antique condition with some signs of age and wear including surface wear to the gold. The ring is quite thin in design so although it has a nice width to the design, the ring is light and comfortable to wear. This does mean that the ring has become out of round ever so slightly over years of wear but this is not noticeable when worn. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique box pictured is not included in the sale but the ring will be shipped in a new presentation ring box and pouch*
