Often given as medals for competitions and engraved with the winner's details, we love to find these antique and vintage fobs to see what detailing they have.
This antique sterling silver fob dates to 1904/05 and has beautiful detailing to the front depicting a side profile of a bird, we think most likely a pigeon as this was likely made to be a pigeon racing competition medal. The back has a very lightly hand etched/marked inscription which is difficult to make out clearly but we think it reads:
'Special
won by
Frankham
Exeter Race
14 mile
Velocity 900 yds
1905'
The fob is made of sterling silver and has British hallmarks to the back featuring the maker's mark 'J.F', the lion passant for sterling silver, the Birmingham assay mark and the date letter 'e' for 1904. There is also a Registered Number to the back that reads 'RDNO 411731'.
The fob measures approx 48mm tall (Not including the jump ring) by approx 33.1mm wide by approx 2.9mm deep and weighs approx 17.5g.
Condition - The fob is in good antique condition but it does show signs of age and wear. There is surface wear to the silver, including tarnishing, rubbing and dark marks in places to both the front and back. The jump ring is currently pushed closed. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique box and chain pictured are not included in the sale but the fob will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
