This antique gold and reverse painted Essex crystal pendant is so sweet and unusual. Heart shaped, the pendant is made of 18ct gold and holds a piece of crystal which has been reverse painted with the image of a pheasant.
We wish we knew the story behind it! We've seen this style of pendant/charm with images of dogs, initials and even lucky symbols previously but never a pheasant. Pheasants are said to symbolise abundance and prosperity and even some traditions consider the birds to be a sign of good luck.
The technique of creating Essex crystal jewellery dates back to around 1860 and is carried out by first engraving an image onto the back of a piece of usually domed rock crystal which would then be reverse painted so when turned back around, a beautiful image would look to be held within the crystal. The really are miniature pieces of art that you can actually wear!
The back of the charm and fitting is made of 18ct gold, partially marked '18'.
The pendant measures approx 15.5mm in tall (not including the jump ring) by approx 12.8mm wide by approx 5.9mm deep. The pendant weighs approx 1.95g in total.
Condition - The pendant is in good antique condition but does show signs of age and wear. There are some marks/areas of scratches to the crystal. These are quite hard to photograph as the rock crystal is reflective but they appear as slightly cloudy areas. There are signs of age, wear and loss of paint to the painted pheasant and wear and marks to the mother of pearl backing. There is also some light surface wear to the gold and the 18ct gold mark is now rubbed and worn away to one side but can still be made out. The jump ring is currently pushed closed. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique box and chain pictured are not included in the sale but the charm will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
