We love finding antique and vintage chains, they seem to be getting harder and harder to find these days too! This particular chain has a really lovely trombone style link (a long link separated by three smaller round links). It also has a fixed T-bar on a slight drop and a double charm clip clasp.
Chains like these were originally watch chains to attach a pocket watch to, but now they make such lovely necklaces when the clips are connected together like a clasp. You can wear it with the clasps to the back and the T-bar to the front, or in reverse with the clasps at the front - these make fantastic charm holders!
The chain is made of 18ct gold fill which is a base metal covered with a fine layer of 18ct gold to give the look of a solid gold chain but without the price tag. The chain is marked on the clip clasps, T-bar and one of the long links '18CTGF' for 18ct gold filled. A maker's mark on the long link can also be made out as 'T (Maltese style cross) H'.
The chain measures approx 17 1/2 inches long including the clasps and the long shaped link measures approx 6.7mm wide. The chain weighs approx 37g in total.
Condition - The chain is in good wearable vintage condition but does show significant signs of age and wear. The links, especially where they rub together, do have areas where the top layer of gold has worn away and the base metal can be seen underneath. This can also be seen on the clip clasps and T-bar. This is darker in colour than the top layer of gold. There is also wear to the T-bar and it is slightly brighter yellow in colour than the chain and clasps. One of the long links is ever so slightly bent to one side and some of the links are pushed closed. The clip clasps still work well. This looks to have been a much loved piece so please only purchase if you are happy that it shows plenty of signs of life (oh if only these pieces could talk!). Please see photos.
