This antique heart shaped locket is such a sweet piece. The front has the loveliest hand engraving that reads 'My Mother' and when you turn the heart over you reveal a locket panel to the back where you can keep a photo or other small memento.
When worn as a pendant, you can choose to keep the locket to the back and the photo hidden and closest to you, or you can keep the engraving a secret and have the locket window showing.
The locket is made of 9ct yellow gold and is marked '9ct' to the bottom of the heart. Without further hallmarks, it's hard to date the locket exactly but we believe it's likely circa 1900-1920 in age.
The heart measures approx 21.7mm tall (not including the jump ring) by approx 18.1mm wide by approx 5.1mm deep and weighs approx 2.2g including the current contents inside the locket. The heart locket panel to the back measures approx 16mm tall by 14.5mm wide.
The locket window is made of plastic, we think it likely had a glass panel originally but sometimes these can break overtime and are often replaced with plastic. There is a pink cardboard behind this along with a back board to pad out the locket as it is quite a deep space. These can be removed to add a photo or memento of your own. The locket panel simply pulls out of the back of the locket and pushes back in place. It currently fits very snugly.
Condition - The locket is in good antique condition but does show some signs of age and wear, including some light surface wear to the gold. The gold is quite reflective though so it isn't too noticeable until closely inspected. The jump ring at the top is currently pushed closed and is quite small. If preferred, we can add a slightly larger 9ct gold jump ring on request. The plastic window panel does have a small mark to it near the top point of the heart. Please see photos.
