This is the perfect ring to celebrate being the king or queen of your kingdom (we can all dream of living in a castle, right!?). This vintage gold signet ring has the most wonderful engraving to the front of what is actually a family crest. There is a tiny rampant lion on top of a castle with turrets!
From some research, we've found that this family crest is linked to several British families including; Anstavill, Capling, Cheverton, Cosars, Harley, Lepton, Lexton, M'Kellar, Oxford and Parscoe families, two of which have family mottos including 'Invicta Labore' latin for 'Unconquerable by fatigue' and 'Virtue et Fide' latin for 'By bravery and faith'. We love these family signet rings as they hold such meaning and detail in such a subtle way.
The ring is made of 9ct gold and has two lots of hallmarks inside the shank, both of which looked to have been distrubed by resizing so sadly neither are complete and the ring's history is a little bit of a mystery. We think it likely has two sets of hallmarks as it could possibly have been made in another country and imported into Britain before 1975, possibly from Ireland.
The 9ct gold hallmarks can be seen clearly in both sets of hallmarks. The maker's mark 'SH' can also be seen. Sadly we can't confirm the other hallmarks visible to be date hallmarks to date the ring exactly, these may have been lost in resizing, along with the assay hallmark, but we think the ring is likely early-mid 20th Century in age.
Ring size - approx a US 7 1/2 / approx a UK O 1/2 - P (the ring feels as if it wear a little snugger than this due to the width of the front of the ring)
The ring weighs approx 3.55g and the face measures approx 12mm by 11mm. The shank tapers down to approx 3mm wide at the back of the shank.
Condition - The ring is in good, wearable vintage condition but does show signs of age and wear. There are marks to the gold, inside and outside of the shank, from at least one previous resizing, these are not too noticable when worn though. There is some surface wear to the gold, including surface scratches, and the engraving is a little worn in places, mainly to the top of the lion. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique box pictured is not included in the sale but the ring will be shipped in a new presentation ring box and pouch*
