A popular design used in the Victorian era, swallows were believed to represent love and were also given as a symbol of returning safely to your loved ones. They also represent spring, hope and new beginnings as they return from migration signalling warmer weather and longer days ahead.
This rare and highly collectable vintage French charm celebrates the swallow’s link to Spring, featuring an enamel swallow mid flight in the centre, the message at the bottom reads' Messagere Du Printemps' which translates to 'Messenger Of Spring'. It would make such a sweet piece if you love the season!
The charm is made from base metal, not gold, and looks to have been lightly gilded to give the look of solid gold. Some of this has now worn away in places.
The pendant measures approx 23.5mm in diameter by approx 32.6mm tall (including the fittings at the top) by approx 1.3mm deep. The charm weighs approx 4.95g.
Condition - The charm is in good vintage condition but does show significant signs of age and wear, including surface wear to and loss of the gilding so there are areas where the base metal shows through. There is also surface wear and age to the enamel and some small sections where it has now worn away. The jump ring is currently pushed closed and isn’t gilded. Please see photos for more detail.
*Please note the antique box and chain pictured are not included in the sale but the charm will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
