This rare, vintage, 1950s, gold coffin charm has some of the most incredible detailing we've ever seen - just look at that tiny skeleton hiding inside! Not for the faint hearted, this charm was likely inspired by antique skeleton pieces also known as memento mori jewellery. The phrase means 'remember you must die' and these pieces acted as little wearable tokens as a reminder that life is precious!
The charm is made of 9ct gold with British hallmarks on the back for the maker 'HG&S', 9ct gold, Birmingham and the date letter 'J' for 1958.
The charm weighs approx 3.4g and measures approx 18.5mm tall (not including the jump ring) by approx 7mm wide by approx 5.2mm deep when closed.
Condition - The charm is in good vintage condition with some light signs of age including some light surface wear to the gold. The hinge mechism still works well and the lid clicks closed to stay closed when worn (the last video shows how the lid can flip open if not clicked closed). The jump ring is currently soldered closed and is also marked for 9ct gold. Please see photos.
*Please note the chain and box pictured are not included in the sale but the charm will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch*
