This antique heart shaped locket is such a sweet piece. The front is decorated with a seven turquoise cabochons that vary in shades of blue and green to form a forget-me-not style flower. There is also lovely engraving throughout too. The back of the heart has a circular glass compartment that holds a photo of a man in uniform. This likely was a love token given when the person pictured had to leave their loved one for a period of time, possibly to go to war.
The pendant is made of base metal which likely originally has a fine layer of gold adhered to its surface to give the look of solid gold but without the price tag. With the locket being over 100 years old (we believe it dates to the later 19th Century), this layer of gold has worn in places. The locket at the back has a glass window, we haven't opened the locket but believe a jeweller should be able to do this if you'd like to put your own photo inside.
The heart measures approx 15mm tall (approx 22.5mm tall including the ring at the top) by approx 13.2mm wide by approx 5.5mm deep and weighs approx 2g
Condition - The pendant does show significant signs of age and wear, including surface wear to the metal/gold, turquoise and the glass panel. Some of the turquoise are chipped and under close inspection there is a little glue residue in places around the turquoise edges. As mentioned above, we haven't opened the glass locket compartment. It isn't hinged so we think it would likely require a jeweller to open if required. Please see photos.
*Please note the chain and box pictured are not included in the sale but the pendant will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch*
