ON HOLD

This antique crescent moon brooch is studded with moonstone cabochons, the perfect stone to highlight the piece's ethereal beauty as the stone is strongly associated with the moon itself and when first discovered, the stone was first thought to have been created by moonbeams.

Moonstone is such a magical stone, often appearing quite clear in colour, it magically transforms when it catches the light with vibrant colour flashes of blues and purples. This brooch is made up of varying sizes of moonstone cabochons, each which catch the light in different ways to reveal their beautiful colours.

The brooch is made of 9ct yellow gold (marked '9ct' to the reverse) and the eleven moonstone cabs are set in open claw settings. The moonstones range in sizes from approx 3mm in diameter to approx 5mm in diameter. Some are taller in profile than others too, and their slight irregularity gives the brooch a really unique feel.

To the back is a simple 'c' clasp with a tube hinge, typical of the late Victorian era. The brooch pin is made of base metal and has been wonderfully curved so that it follows the shape of the crescent moon perfectly.

The brooch weighs approx 3g in total and measures approx 53.4mm from end to end by approx 17.5mm wide.

Without full hallmarks, it is hard to date a piece exactly but we believe the brooch likely dates to the late Victorian era. The style of the clap is in keeping with this time and crescent moons were a popular trend in jewellery at this time too.

The piece looks lovely pinned to knitwear or a coat lapel but it would also make a stunning pendant if converted too.

Condition - The brooch is in good, wearable antique condition for a piece that is over a 100 years old but it does show signs of age and wear. Two of the moonstone cabs have chips to one side and on close inspection all stones have some surface wear to them. The centre moonstone cab also has a visible inclusion to the stone, something not always to everyone's taste but we think this just adds to the brooch's charm. The last three photos above have been taken with a loupe to show a magnified view of the stones and their inclusions and wear. The brooch fastening still works well. Please see photos.

*Please note the antique box is not included in the sale but the brooch will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch*
