The Hebrew word for watchtower, for centuries, particularly during the Victorian era, sweethearts have given Mizpah jewellery to their loved one when they have been separated from one another in the hope that they will remain safe and well whilst apart, until they are reunited.
This beautiful antique, Victorian Mizpah ring is the perfect example of this type of love token. Made from sterling silver with British hallmarks, the word 'MIZPAH' is spelt out in raised letters in a beautiful gothic style font.
Inside, the ring is hallmarked for the maker 'A.S', sterling silver, Birmingham and the date letter 'g' for 1881. There is also a very faint hand engraved 'J/X' which we think could possibly be the original owner's initial and their sweetheart's, maybe even added by themselves - the loveliest extra romantic touch!
The ring weighs approx 3.45g and measures approx 6.4mm at its widest point at the front and tapers down to approx 3.2mm wide at the back. The mizpah letter measures approx 15.3mm wide from the 'M' to the 'H'.
Ring size - approx a US size 5 / approx a UK J 1/2
Condition - The ring is in good antique condition with some signs of age and wear including surface wear and some light tarnishing to the silver. The silver has a lovely matte finish to it. There is an old resize mark towards the back of the shank. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique box pictured is not included in the sale but the ring will be shipped in a new presentation ring box and pouch*
