We love pieces of jewellery that are functional as well as beautiful and this antique silver gilt box locket has a hidden useful surprise inside. Not forgetting to mention that incredibe floral chased detail all the way around the outside too! 
 
The box locket opens to reveal a tiny dice inside - perfect if you love to play board games, esepcially on the go! Or perhaps you just love a charm you can fiddle and play with when worn.  
 
The locket is made of silver gilt, the top loop the jump ring attaches onto is faintly marked '800' for silver known as continental silver. Over the top of this the locket was gilded to give the look of gold. To the outisde this has faded over the years, inside the locket the gilding is still much brighter. Every side of the outside of the locket has been wonderfully chased with floral and decorative details. 
 
The locket measures approx 23.5mm tall (not including the jump ring) by approx 7.5mm wide by approx 8.2mm deep and weighs approx 2.4g, including the dice the locket weighs approx 2.75g in total. The dice measures approx 5.3mm by 5.3mm by 5.3mm. The dice is not made of silver. 
 
Condition - The locket is in good antique condition but does show significant signs of age and wear which isn't surprising given it likely dates to the late Victorian era, cirac 1900. There is some surface wear to the gilding, particularly to the outside which has now faded a lot in comparison to the inside. The silver can be seen through the gilding in places and there is also tarnishing. There are some significant marks to the inside of the locket and the dice shows signs of wear too. The hinge mechanism works well and the opening door closes firmly with a click to stay closed when worn.
