A design that's been popular for centuries and is still popular today, this beautifully detailed antique man in the moon brooch makes a stunning statement when worn on a coat/jacket lapel. We especially love how the moon face is set within a crescent moon border too - we've not seen another man in the moon piece quite like it and these pieces in general are becoming harder and harder to find.
We believe it's late Victorian in age and this particular man in the moon face is made of glass. It has incredible deailing to create a three dimensional face that's beautiful to look at from all angles. There looks to be foiling or a some other form of backing behind the glass which adds a depth and slight variety in colour, including green, yellow and slightly orange in places, depending on the light. The face is set in base metal, which we believe may have once been plated, but this has now worn away. A small part of plating is still visible underneath the pin at the back.
The brooch weighs approx 8.9g and measures approx 23mm in diameter. the brooch pin overhanngs by approx 3mm.
Condition - The brooch shows signs of age and wear, including wear and nibbling to the glass face in places. There is also a tiny black dot that is just underneath the nose, we've tried to clean this off but it is still visible under close inspection. The metal also shows signs of age and wear, including surface scratches and marks. It looks to have once been plated, but nearly all of this is now worn away, except on the reverse underneath the bar of the pin.
The pin looks to be a possible replacement as the metal doesn't match the brooch itself, however this could have been how it was originally made. The bar of the pin does have a small kink to it, although it still performs well and feels strong. There is a small amount of movement where it joins onto the brooch in the hinge but this doesn't seem to cause any problems and where the hinge joins the brooch is secure and strong. The brooch mechanism has a simple c clasp which is a little snug, the pin releases but it needs a little pull to release it completely from the clasp. This could be altered by moving the c clasp at that end slightly (we'd recommend a jeweller doing this) but we've left it as it currently is.
There looks to be foiling or some other type of backing behind the glass moon face to give extra depth and colour to it. This does look to have some damage to it in places as there are places where the colour behind the face is darker. We love the colour and character it gives to the face but we realise this might not be for everyone! Please see the photos for more detail.
