These antique gold fobs are such incredible pieces to find, we love a little mystery too! This particular fob has the most beautiful double sided swivel detail, one side features a carnelian carved 'EXCELSIOR' and the other side a bloodstone carved with what looks to be two interlinked 'D' initials and possibly also a 'H'.
We know very little about the origin of the fob, except that the latin phrase 'excelsior' means 'ever upward'. This has been used as family mottos and is also the motto of New York Sate. We think the interlocking initials could be a reference to someone's initials or perhaps some form of group.
The gold tests as 9ct gold, the fob is unhallmarked which is common for a piece of this age. Without hallmarks, it's hard to date the fob exactly but we think it's likely circa mid-late 19th Century in age.
The fob weighs approx 3.8g and measures approx 36mm tall (not including the jump ring) by approx 20mm wide by approx 6mm deep.
Condition - The fob is in good antique condition to say it is over 100 years old but does show signs of age and wear, including surface wear to the gold, carneial and bloodstone. The carnelian has a small chip to one of its edges. The ring at the top has also worn away at the top and is a little indented, likely from being worn for many years on a chain. The swivel mechanism still works well. Please see photos.
*Please note the chain and box pictured are not included in the sale but the fob will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
