We love jewellery that's practical as well as beautiful and this antique, French, silver and rose gold pencil pendant is exactly that! The casing is made of silver and there’s a real, tiny pencil inside which is flat in shape.
We think the pendant was originally part of a chatelaine, a piece of jewellery which fastened to a belt or pocket and had chains attached to it, with small, useful items on the ends of the chains, including keys, fobs, scissors, purses and pencils to name just a few, so these useful items were always close to hand.
We love the attention to detail that's gone into this piece so that it truly is a beautiful piece to wear as well as use. The front of the casing is decorated with a silver, circular plaque that bears the famous image of Joan of Arc and two rose gold, double cross-like symbols too to the top and bottom. The pencil simply pulls out of the bottom of the pendant and is marked 'DEPOSE' on the silver. The pendant is not marked for silver but does test as sterling silver.
The pendant measures approx 54.2mm long (not including the jump ring) by approx 8.2mm wide by approx 4.6mm deep and weighs approx 2.85g (including the pencil inside).
Condition - the pendant is in good antique condition to say it is over 100 years old but it does show some signs of age and wear. There is surface wear to the silver and rose gold. Where the two rose gold double crosses and the Joan of Arc panel has been added, there are dark marks to the silver. There are also dark marks to the silver section that holds the pencil. The pencil is almost at its end, having been hand sharpened, but it is still useable. It could also likely be replaced if another pencil of the same size could be found to replace it. The jump ring is currently pushed closed. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique box and chain pictured are not included in the sale but the pendant/fob will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch*
