One of three birthstones for June, moonstone is such a magical looking stone. Said to promote inner strength and growth, this antique moonstone ring displays such beautiful shades of blue when the light catches it.
The moonstone cabochon is set in a closed back setting made of 9ct gold. The ring is marked twice inside the shank for 9ct gold and also has the maker's mark 'SB & S Ld' which we believe is for the jewellers S. Blanckensee & Sons Ltd who were working in the late Victorian era (circa 1897-1899).
Ring size - approx a US 6 / approx a UK L 1/2-M
The moonstone measures approx 8.5mm in diameter. The ring shank is approx 2.8mm wide. The ring weighs approx 2.2g.
Condition - The ring does show signs of age and wear, both to the gold and the moonstone. The moonstone has surface wear to it and the gold shank also has surface wear. The gold setting of the moonstone has a slightly irregular edge to it, this could be from when it was made but we think it's likely some of the gold has worn over time.
When the light catches the moonstone, it has a lovely blue colour to the stone. There are times when the stone appears almost translucent and the gold setting underneath is visible through the stone. There appears to be some marks to the setting that are visible through the stone when the light isn't catching it.
There are two join marks on either shoulder of the ring, visible inside the shank, which makes us think the moonstone could have been from a previous piece of jewellery, perhaps a brooch or pin, and has been converted into a ring. We believe this is an old conversion if this is the case.
As the moonstone is in a closed back setting, we do not recommend letting the ring come into contact with water and lotions, as these may become trapped behind the stone and loosen it/cause damage over time.
Overall it is a beautiful antique ring with plenty of life left in it, but please note it is not in perfect, 'as new' condition. Please see photos for more details.
