This antique, gold and bloodstone dog fob has completely stolen our hearts! With the sweetest detailing throughout, right down to its tiny little fur lines and floppy ears, as well as being beautiful, this piece would have once been seen as practical too.
The bottom of the dog's head is inlaid with a circular piece of bloodstone which could have been carved with a family crest or initials and used to imprint wax seals on envelopes and scrolls. The bloodstone in this piece has never been carved so it could be decorated with a design of your choice or left as is. A lovely old piece of history that's still very wearable and timeless!
The dog has the most wonderful detailing throughout, we think it's likely modelled on a labrador or retriever. The charm is made of 9ct gold which has lovely rosey warm tones in places and is yellower in others. The dog's head is very faintly marked '9ct' to one side.
Without further hallmarks, it's hard to date the fob exactly but we believe it's likely late 19th Century/early 20th Century in age.
The fob measures approx 12.3mm tall (not including the jump ring) by approx 16.9mm nose to bloodstone by approx 10mm wide and weighs approx 1.1g. The fob is hollow in the middle.
Condition - The fob is in good antique condition but does show signs of age and wear. There is surface wear to the gold and bloodstone, the 9ct mark is now a little rubbed, and there are darker marks in places within the fur lines. There is a small indent to one of the dog's ears. The bloodstone does have some very slight nibbles to the edges which are only really noticeable on close inspection. As mentioned above, the gold is rosey and warm in places and yellower in tone in others. The jump ring is currently pushed closed. Please see photos.
*Please note the boxes and chain pictured are not included in the sale but the fob will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch.*
