Originally made as a fob case to hold your stamps, this antique late Victorian/early Edwardian 1901 gold opening envelope makes such a beautiful pendant. Store your keepsakes, like photos, a mini love letter or even a lock of hair inside!
The envelope is made of 9ct gold which is rosey to the outisde and yellow to the inside. Inside the envelope has British hallmarks for the maker 'G.V&Co', 9ct gold, Birmingham and the date letter 'b' for 1901. The inside flap of the envelope also has British hallmarks for 9ct gold too and the attached jump ring. The flap opens to reveal the compartment inside. As the jump ring is attached to the right hand side of the envelope, when worn the pendant hangs sideways as shown in the last photo.
The envelope measures approx 22.3mm tall by approx 28.9mm wide (not including the fittings to the side) by approx 5.1mm deep and weighs approx 4.85g in total. The envelope has lovely detailing to the back too. It is hand engraved with a monogram combining the initials 'A' and 'R'.
Condition - The envelope is in good antique condition but does show significant signs of age and wear, including surface wear to the gold which is to be expected with a piece that is 123 years old. There is surface wear and several dents to the gold throughout. There are also dark marks to the gold to the outside of the envelope in several places - to the top, to the bottom, to the back and to the side where the fittings connect. The hinge mechanism works well and the envelope flap pushes closed (it does not click closed). The jump ring is currently pushed closed. Please see photos.
*Please note the antique chain and box pictured are not included in the sale but the charm will be shipped in a new presentation box and pouch*
